How to play snake

People ask “how to play snake” like there’s a secret mode unlock. There isn’t. Four directions. Food makes you longer. Longer steals the empty floor you were using as oxygen. Walls (on Solid) end you. Your own body ends you too. Instant reverse into yourself is blocked because that would be rude even for us.

The board is upstairs on purpose. Reading about turning left is worthless if you can’t poke the pad and feel the late correction in your thumb. Desktop: arrows or WASD. Phone: swipe for direction changes — you’re not dragging a puppet segment like a cursor.

Already muscle-memory the edge loop? Skip the sermon and go play. Want green cosplay while you learn? Nokia. School Wi‑Fi with opinions? Unblocked is still one board, not a directory. Soft first lap? Classic.

When

When to use

First time. Explaining to a human who thinks snake means “the io one with strangers.” Checking swipe vs keys. Showing a kid without sounding like a textbook.

When not

When not to

You already turn early in your sleep → go play or classic. Want green brick-phone mood as the main event → nokia. Filter hell and the unblocked search phrase → snake-unblocked. Want a multiplayer map → wrong site entirely.

Defaults

Assumptions

Solid walls on this explainer’s default board unless you flip Wrap. The timer moves the head; you don’t drag one segment. Instant reverse into yourself is blocked. Sound off until you bother it. Best is local.

Steps

How

  1. Arrows / WASD on desktop, or swipe the pad on phone — direction, not a drag puppet.
  2. Hit food. Grow. Feel the map shrink like someone turned the lights down.
  3. Leave an exit lane on purpose, or invent a new swear when you don’t.
  4. Crash → New game. Peek at Best if you’re petty. Pace strip if Easy feels like waiting.

Worked notes

Examples

  • Moving right, you tap up a beat early → clean — pride arrives late, thumbs arrive early
  • You mash left while going right → game says no — saves you from an instant self-sandwich
  • You stop touching and hope it parks → it doesn’t — the clock is the boss; you only choose turns

Watch-outs

Gotchas

  • No standing still. The clock is the boss.
  • Length is a trap you asked for when you ate.
  • Some snake pages wrap the edges by default; ours says so when Wrap is on. Don’t assume teleport walls.
  • Winning isn’t a tile with confetti. You outrun embarrassment until you don’t.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I win?
You don’t “win” a tile. You outrun embarrassment.
Touch?
Swipe for turns. Keys on desktop. Same stupid mistakes.
Why is there a board on a how-to page?
Because reading about turning left is worthless if you can’t try it.
Sound?
Off until you bother it. Quiet rooms exist.
Is this the io version?
No. Lonely grid. Nobody else is eating your food.
